Thank you for participating in our 8th Annual Moose Anderson Days and Poker Run

April 24 and 25, 2004

On April 24-25 Moose Anderson Days was again held at Jawbone Station.  The event honors the life of Mark "Moose" Anderson who served on the first OHV Commission formed in California.  He was later involved in a motorcycle accident in Baja, CA, after which he lapsed into a coma and eventually died.  When Jawbone Station was built in 1996 it was decided to dedicate the building to Mark's memory.

Each year on the anniversary of the dedication, volunteers gather for a massive desert cleanup.  This year on Saturday, following a sausage and pancake breakfast, more than 200 volunteers divided into three groups and cleaned up mining equipment and trash at the Burro Schmidt tunnel site, at Dove Springs Bowl, and for several miles along Neuralia road in nearby Cantil.   Returning to the station around 3:00 p.m. they were given free t-shirts and a delicious tri-tip dinner.

Following the dinner several door prizes were raffled off, and one volunteer won $108.00 in the 50/50 raffle.  Ken Adocle of Oxnard, CA won the generator which had been donated by the Honda Proving Center.

On Sunday following another free breakfast competitors departed on a poker run, and several more departed on a 4x4 tour hosted by Roger and Cecile Vargo of Ecological Four Wheeling.  The poker run was won by Matthew Young, age 11, of Citrus Heights, CA.  Matthew had gathered three tens and a pair of jacks.  Second prize went to Keith Green, and third place to Matthew's mother, Karen Young.   The 4x4 tour took participants through the El Paso Mountains and, to the delight of all, ended with the vehicles meticulously threading their way through Goler Wash.

Numerous photos of the events are available on line at www.jawbone.org.  Just click on "Moose Anderson photos."

The Friends of Jawbone and the Bureau of Land Management wish to thank all the volunteers, the sponsors and the folks who donated all the door prizes.  Special thanks also go to Roger and Cecil for the tour, and to Steve Bouche and the Desert Search and Rescue team for preparing the tri-tip dinner, and to Ed and Linda Waldheim for cooking all those sausages and pancakes.

If you missed it, you missed a great event and we hope you will mark your calendar for the next Moose Anderson Days to be held on April 23-24, 2005.
