We invite you to explore the Rand Mountains Management Area, one of East Kern County’s most popular outdoor destinations. Rich in history, the Rand Mountains lie in the heart of a once great mining district.

The Rand Mountains area is a favorite location among off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts. There are many miles of designated routes that provide scenic and challenging riding opportunities.

The Rand Mountains area is also home to rare plants and animals, in particular the threatened desert tortoise. The Rand Mountains Management Area shares its southwestern boundary with the Desert Tortoise Natural Area (DTNA). All motorized vehicles are prohibited in the DTNA which is managed so as to protect and promote the recovery of the desert tortoise.

The past is kept alive in the local mountain communities of Randsburg, Johannesburg and Red Mountain where visitors can find antiques, supplies and refreshments.

It is important that all motorized vehicles remain only on roads and trails that are marked open. Staying on these marked trails is the best way to safely avoid old mining hazards. Also, by doing so you can best protect the fragile habitats of the animals and plants that make the Rand Mountains area their home.
