One of our goals is to educate parents and kids on the safe and proper use of OHVs in an effort to reduce crashes and injuries resulting from inappropriate OHV use.<\/p><p>We emphasize the ATV Safety Institute&#8217;s Golden Rules:<\/p><p><strong>ATV Safety Institute\u2019s Golden Rules:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Always wear a helmet and other protective gear.<\/li><li>Never ride on public roads&#8211;another vehicle could hit you.<\/li><li>Never ride under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.<\/li><li>Never carry a passenger on a single-rider vehicle, nor more than an operator and passenger on a ATV designed for two persons.<\/li><li>Ride an ATV that&#8217;s right for your age.<\/li><li>Supervise riders younger than 16; ATVs are not toys.<\/li><li>Ride only on designated trails and at a safe speed.<\/li><li>Take a hands-on ATV RiderCourse and the free online E-Course. In addition, operating or riding an OHV with an open container of alcohol is prohibited. (23152(a) CVC)<\/li><li>Possession or use of any glass container, empty or not, used for carrying any liquid for drinking purposes is prohibited. (43 CFR 8365.1-6)<\/li><li>OHVs must be equipped with an approved muffler, brakes, and spark arrestor. (38365,38355, and 38366 CVC)<\/li><li>Seat belts are to be worn if your vehicle is equipped with them. The OHV operator must be able to reach and operate all controls on the vehicle.<\/li><li>Headlights and taillights are required when driving between one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise. (38335 CVC)<\/li><li>OHVs are not to be operated faster than what is safe for the conditions of the area. (38305 CVC)<\/li><li>When riding within 50 feet of any campground, campsite, or concentration of people or animals, speeds cannot exceed 15 mph. (38310 CVC)<\/li><li>It is unlawful for any person to drive any motor vehicle in any manner with a willful and wanton disregard for the safety of other persons. Bring maps and appropriate equipment into the back country. Check weather forecasts in advance and prepare accordingly.<\/p><p><strong>Dress Properly<\/strong><br \/>Wear layered clothing to slow dehydration and minimize exposure. Pack good hiking shoes, loose-fitting, natural fiber clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. During winter, or even in summer at higher elevations, bring extra clothing including a rain or snow jacket, and gloves to be protected in extreme weather, or in the event that your vehicle becomes disabled.<\/p><p><strong>Carry Plenty of Water<\/strong><br \/>There are many areas on this map with limited or no dependable natural water source. Carry a minimum of one gallon of water per person, per day. Do not ration water; it will only do you good if you drink it.<\/p><p><strong>Batteries and Charging<\/strong><br \/>Cell phones and GPS devices are popular when riding\u00a0on designated trails. However, using your cell phone for GPS navigation may deplete the battery faster than other uses. Always travel with a car charger, extra batteries, and a portable charger.<\/p><p><strong>Mineshafts<\/strong><br \/>For your safety, do not enter mineshafts.\u00a0<em>Stay Out and Stay Alive!<\/em><\/p><p><strong>Vehicles<\/strong><br \/>Keep your vehicle well maintained. Pack extra water, food, a shovel, common hand tools, a tow strap, reflectors, and a blanket or sleeping bag. Check road conditions and beware of flash floods.
