In the winter, when snow is covering the higher elevations, open deserts provide recreational opportunities for OHV enthusiasts, rock collecting, and people looking for a quiet wilderness experience. In the summer, when the desert temperatures\u00a0rise, head to the mountains for breathtaking hikes and world class trout fishing. Lake Isabella, one of California\u2019s premiere warm water fisheries, is just around the corner. Mt. Whitney and Death Valley, the highest and the lowest points in the contiguous United States, are within a short drive of Ridgecrest.<\/p><p>300 South Richmond Road<br \/>Ridgecrest, CA 93555<br \/>(760) 384-5400 visit: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/blm.gov\/california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blm.gov\/california<\/a><br \/><\/em><\/p><p><strong>Eastern Kern County Onyx Ranch State Vehicle Recreation Area (SVRA)<br \/><\/strong>Eastern Kern County Onyx Ranch SVRA, located between Jawbone Canyon and Dove Springs, is the second largest SVRA in the state. In 2015, the California State Park\u2019s Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division acquired approximately 25,000 acres of private property here for the sole purpose\u00a0of OHV recreation. Its parcels are interspersed among BLM managed lands in a checkerboard fashion. So as to minimize confusion, the BLM\u2019s rules regarding recreational uses have been temporarily adopted for this SVRA land. The park is located at the southernmost tip of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Each canyon\u00a0is unique, with dramatic shapes and vivid colors. Following wet winters, the park\u2019s wildflower displays are especially stunning. The beauty of the desert, combined with the geologic features, make this park a favorite camping destination. Hikers, off-highway vehicle users, and horseback riders have over 1,500 miles of maintained roads, 1,000 miles of abandoned roads, and 850 miles of trails in the forest available for their use and enjoyment.
