Red Rock Canyon State Park
Picturesque Red Rock Canyon State Park has been used as the setting for many pictures and television productions. In addition to its scenic qualities, the canyon is known for its geological, archaeological, and paleontological history. Mining began in the 1870s, but was not an important activity until the gold strikes in nearby Garlock and Randsburg. This encouraged prospecting in nearly all the area’s canyons and gulches. Only patented mines may be operated and rock collecting is NOT permitted. Today, popular activities include camping, picnicking, hiking, and desert photography.
Dove Springs OHV Open Area is accessible from Ricardo Campground via Abbot Road Wash. Off-Highway vehicles are allowed on designated four-wheel drive routes located in the park. All vehicles must be registered. Adults (18 or older) must have a valid driver license. Children (under 18) must take an ATV safety training course, be supervised by an adult with an appropriate ATV safety certificate, or possess an ATV safety certificate of their own. For information on OHV trail use within the park, contact the visitor’s center in Ricardo Campground or call (661) 942-0662 or visit: parks.ca.gov.
